EVENT REPORT: Engaging external partners for an enterprising curriculum

USE Academy Launch Event

The launch event of the USE Academy was held on 6 March 2014 in the Enterprise Zone, and the theme was ‘Engaging external partners for an enterprising curriculum’.

Nearly forty people attended, and all the Faculties were represented strongly. It was great to see some new faces! We tried out a unique format for the event, asking participants to write their questions and comments on the walls (yes, really!) before we went into a panel discussion, hosted by Professor Brendan Stone. We then used the graffiti to structure the conversation. The event was a great opportunity for participants to share their own experiences and best practice, as well as to get advice on the best ways to engage external partners.

Participants’ top tips for engaging with externals:

"We are very clear about managing expectations - that is why we produced a handbook for students and clients" - Carolyn

"Alumni are very important" – Linda

“Don’t neglect chance meetings. Some of the best projects have come around without agendas” – Brendan

"Remember to value the processes and how students learn" – Carolyn

"The worst that could happen is that they [externals] say no. Be brave. Just do it!" - Sarah

We’ve created a Storify of the event, below, in which you can read about how the discussion unfolded:
